I have been working in other people’s homes for almost 13 years now. In all these years I would say that at least 80% of the homes have had some sort of pet, usually a cat, dog, a cat and a dog, or multiples of one or the other or both!! And, in all these years, I have never met a pet that didn’t love me. Even the shy cats that usually hide all day, would come out and take a nap on my tarps! Animals are my friends, and have been 100% of the time—-UNTIL NOW!!
Recently I went to a house to do a strip job. The wife had already gone to work, and the husband was waiting for me. When he let me in, he took me to a little powder room next to the kitchen. This was the room I was stripping (wallpaper). Before he left for work, he told me that they had a cat, but that she would probably hide in the basement while I was there. The basement door was right next to the powder room. I explained that I get along just fine with animals and it would be no problem if she came up to visit me.
Less than 5 minutes after he left for work, the cat appeared at the bathroom door. Of course, being the animal friendly person that I am, I started to talk to her. I very slowly reached out to her, so she could smell my hand. At this time, most animals will sniff a bit, and sometimes lick or even roll over for a tummy rub! Not this cat–OH NO!! She immediately started to Hiss, and I mean really loud, and before I could move my hand, she started to swat at me, while she continued to hiss!!! OMG I was totally shocked! This has never happened to me before. So, I continued working while she sat at the door staring at me. I figured that if I remained calm and just continued my work, she would eventually warm up to me. So as I worked I kept talking to her, but did not extend my hand.
Since the powder room was so small, I left my caddy of tools, and my bag of other things outside the door. After awhile, she got nosy! She sniffed around my tools, and tried to crawl into my bag. Now, my bag had my lunch in it, so I figured that I better not tempt her with my ham sandwich, so I reached for my lunch bag and she started to attack AGAIN!! Now this cat was starting to make me nervous. An hour went by, and I needed to use a bathroom, however the customer had removed the toilet in the powder room for easier removal of the paper! So, I stamped my feet and did a little hissing myself, and the cat ran down the basement steps. I quickly closed the basement door, and for the first time I felt safe in that house!!
As I was finishing the job, the owner called me to see how it was going. I explained to her that I was just finishing up the job, but that I had a problem with her cat, so I closed it into the basement!! She then explained to me that the cat is that way with everyone!! It even acts that way with her children and grandchildren when they come to visit!! She had thought that her husband would have put her in the basement before he left, but HE DIDN’T!! I explained that when the cat ran down the stairs I closed the door, and she was fine with that, but she asked if I would open the door when I left!
As I was cleaning up and packing my things, the cat was on the other side of the door hissing and swatting under the door with her paws!! She seemed so angry and annoyed that now I was scared to open the door for her!!! I totally carried all my things outside, and left the front door open. Now it was time to spring the monster!!! By this time, the hissing and swatting had stopped, so I was hoping that she had gone downstairs so I could make a fast escape! Luckily it was a clear shot from opening the door to my escape!!! I quickly opened and at the same time, ran to the exit. Sure enough, she immediately sprang out the door!! I never looked back until I was safely on the other side of the exit! I peeked in the window, and she was just standing there, staring at the door!! Wow, what an adventure!! And from now on, when the customer will not be home I better make sure that they lock up their CRAZY animals! Now, I can no longer say that I get along with pets 100%
